Tattoo stores and tattoo supply companies are having a big year.
The demand for new tattoo supplies has been building since President Donald Trump announced his plan to scrap federal guidelines for tattooing and replacing it with state-sanctioned tattoos.
And tattoo supplies are just getting started.
On a recent Thursday, there were over 500 tattoo shops in the city of Fort McMurray, where temperatures hover around minus 40 C and the temperature can dip as low as minus 40.
But there’s a lot more to it than just that.
Tattoo shops are growing in popularity.
In 2017, the city recorded 5,700 new tattoo applications, up by more than 30 per cent compared to the previous year.
A lot of those new applications came from tattoo supplies stores, such as tattoo supplies chain Artisan Tattoo, which opened a new store in Fort McMurdo in January.
“It was a pretty easy decision to open up,” said Rob St. John, the co-owner of Artisan, which also owns the popular Edmonton Tattoo shop.
St. Johns, who’s also the owner of Tattoo Express, the only tattoo shop in Fort McPherson, said the increase in demand has been driven in part by the fact that tattoos are no longer seen as an exclusive, exclusive sport.
“People want to get their face done,” he said.
“The demand has skyrocketed and it’s just a fantastic time to be in Alberta.”
For some tattoo artists, it’s a little bit more complicated.
One of the big challenges in selling new tattoos is that most of them don’t have the same protective coatings that are used on most other parts of the body.
So for some people, like St. Johnston, the need to buy protective coats isn’t an issue at all.
He said the company is able to offer some of the cheapest protective coats in the province.
“You don’t necessarily need to have a really expensive protective coat to get a good tattoo,” he explained.
“A lot of people use less protective coat for a lot of different reasons, so we don’t really have to spend as much money on it.”
St.john also said that while there are tattoo supply stores in Fort Mac, he’s seeing more demand from people wanting to buy tattoos from the comfort of their own home.
For many people, the thought of spending thousands of dollars to buy a new tattoo just doesn’t seem like the right way to go.
“I think a lot [of people] want to go for a tattoo and feel good, feel happy, feel connected to themselves,” said St.
St Johns said the increased demand for tattoos has been good for business, with Tattoo Supply Co. seeing an increase in sales of its tattoo supplies. “
But I think for some, that’s really important to them, and for some of us, it could be the difference between being able to get our hair done or get a tattoo done.”
St Johns said the increased demand for tattoos has been good for business, with Tattoo Supply Co. seeing an increase in sales of its tattoo supplies.
“We see a lot from the people that are wanting to get the tattoos done, they want to buy the protective coat, they are buying more coats, they’re buying the tattoo tools, the supplies, so it’s really great to see that,” said Rick Nussbaum, owner of tattoo supplies company Artisan.
Nussbaums business is seeing a steady increase in orders from people looking to get tattoos done at home.
“What people are doing is they are ordering from the store and then getting their tattoos done,” said Nussbums business.
“They are just putting their hands on the machine, and they are just making sure their tattoo is done.”
For St. johns, the new demand is making it a lot easier to sell new tattoos.
“Our business is up almost five per cent,” said the tattoo artist.
“So we’re up to $1,200 for our next batch of people to get them done.
We’re doing about $1 million a month right now.”
